Lead Engineer
At SafetyClerk, we are building the next generation of construction operations, safety, risk management, and insurance technology software.
Our platform powers workforce onboarding, safety compliance, time tracking, access control, insurance tracking, daily logs, incident reporting, equipment inspections, and real-time risk intelligence for Construction Managers, General Contractors, Owners, Brokers, and Subcontractors across the United States.
We are looking for a Lead Engineer to help architect, build, and scale the SafetyClerk platform across our web, mobile, and data stack. You will work directly with the founders and leadership on technical strategy, lead delivery on critical initiatives, and mentor engineers across the team.
This role is ideal for a full-stack engineer who is comfortable owning systems end-to-end — from database schema and backend services, to web and mobile clients, to deployment and observability.

- Design system: native Lit Web Components, design tokens, Storybook
- Data and analytics: FastAPI services, ClickHouse, geospatial data pipelines
- Tooling: GitHub, Pytest, Jest, ESLint, Rollup
What You'll Do
- Lead architecture and delivery of major features across the Flask monolith, Next.js website, Expo mobile app, and FastAPI data services
- Design clean, well typed APIs and database schemas with SQLAlchemy and Alembic
- Drive code quality, testing, and review standards across the engineering team
- Build and evolve the shared design system of native Lit Web Components used by Flask and the React Native components used by mobile
- Partner with Product and Customer Success to translate operational and compliance workflows into reliable software
- Own performance, reliability, and observability of customer facing systems
- Mentor engineers, run technical design reviews, and shape long term technical strategy
- Participate in hiring and help grow the engineering team as the company scales
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role
- Strong backend experience in Python with Flask or a similar framework, plus relational database design with Postgres or equivalent
- Solid frontend experience with modern TypeScript, React or React Native, and component driven UI
- Comfortable across the stack: API design, data modeling, frontend rendering, build pipelines, and deployment
- Experience writing and maintaining tests at multiple levels (unit, integration, end to end)
- Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions with both engineers and non technical stakeholders
- Comfortable working in a startup environment with evolving priorities
Big Plus If You Have
- Experience with Expo and React Native in production
- Experience building and maintaining a shared design system or component library (Lit, Web Components, or similar)
- Experience with ClickHouse, OLAP databases, or large geospatial datasets
- Experience with FastAPI or async Python services
- Familiarity with construction tech, insurtech, compliance, workforce management, or operational SaaS
- Experience leading on observability, performance tuning, or security in customer facing applications
- Open source contributions or prior staff or lead engineer experience at a startup
